We previously collaborated with Uppsala University with Alinien, but we now have the opportunity to develop our own concept for educational environments. This project includes classrooms and practice rooms for programs in physiotherapy, occupational therapy, medicine, and pharmacy.
Among the teaching spaces, there is a variety of rooms tailored for different activities. One example is a practice apartment that simulates a home environment, along with training pharmacies furnished with donated furniture from three different pharmacy chains. All furnishings are reused, contributing to a sustainable solution.
There are also spacious, flexible lecture halls that can be adapted for both smaller group exercises and larger lectures, creating a dynamic learning environment.
Challenges
Since the facilities are located underground with limited daylight, one of the biggest challenges was to create credible and comfortable rooms using artificial light. Only the large central practice classrooms had access to daylight through skylights, which required innovative lighting solutions for the rest of the spaces.
Another challenge was the limited space, where many functions needed to coexist in a smaller area. Additionally, there were high demands for hygiene and durable materials, both due to it being an educational environment and because of the daily disinfection routines.
Solutions
We conducted a thorough inventory of existing furniture and equipment to maximize reuse. Worn furnishings were renovated and supplemented only where necessary, contributing to both sustainability and cost-effectiveness.
We viewed the limited natural light as an opportunity to create a scenographic atmosphere through the use of light panels and textiles like curtains, which gave the rooms a warm and inviting ambiance.
We selected sustainable and durable materials to meet the demands for wear resistance and hygiene. The interior concept not only offers functional spaces for study but also provides a pleasant break area where students can relax and socialize.
