Uppsala kommuns digital innovation lab was inaugurated in 2020 with the aim of being a creative meeting place for employees, residents, business, civil society and academia. When the lab was given a location in Uppsala’s new city hall in 2022, Indicum was commissioned to design the physical premises, which were inaugurated in early 2023. The purpose of the lab is to develop methods, processes and tools to create new solutions for a smart and sustainable Uppsala.

Our goal was to create a creative interior that energizes and invites new ideas. A color scheme with lively, warm colors was developed and to meet sustainability and budget requirements, it was decided to work only with recycled furniture. In the project, we have looked in storage and reused the municipality’s own furniture in the first place, secondly, we have reconditioned and reupholstered the municipality’s chairs and thirdly, we have used Adda’s framework agreement for the purchase of reused furniture from various actors.

As the Innovation Lab is used in many different ways by groups in different constellations, it was important to create a flexible interior that is easy to rearrange and supports several different types of work in both smaller and larger groups.

The colour named “burnt mole” in the project can be found on the wall
