At BMC – Biomedicine Center in Uppsala, tomorrow’s doctors, pharmacists, dispensers, biomedical scientists, natural scientists, and engineers are educated. BMC, which is part of Uppsala University, began construction in the 1960s. The building, designed by architect Paul Hedqvist, was completed in 1985.

During 2023-2024, Akademiska Hus is undertaking modernizations of BMC, including the A-line, which is the communication corridor on two levels that runs through and connects all BMC buildings. In 2023, Indicum was tasked with developing a color and interior concept for the A-line, which spans a total of 2,000 square meters. The ground floor, with a high flow of people, connects to lecture halls, seminar rooms, cafeterias, and more. One floor above, the space is divided into separate and more focused areas connected to laboratories, libraries, and student kitchens.

Indicum, which has previously collaborated with Uppsala University on Segerstedtshuset, has developed the interior design concept “Växtverk” for BMC. This concept emphasizes the aesthetics of nature with a verdant color palette and wooden furniture. At BMC, where innovation and research are at the forefront, the new interior will reflect these values. The A-wing will become a refreshing oasis filled with greenery, providing students with a space to recharge between lectures.

In developing the interior design concept, a thorough analysis of the existing furnishings was conducted to integrate them into the new proposal from the outset. The A-wing contained a large number of chairs, tables, and sofas in various ages and color schemes. Although the furnishings were of good quality, they needed renovation after many years of use. We viewed this as an opportunity to harmonize the interior with a cohesive and thoughtfully designed color palette. As a result, through reconditioning, the chairs, sofas, and tables will receive a refreshed appearance and enhanced quality.

Indicum has also worked on artistic design through large graphic prints on wall sections, creating a spatial experience that connects with the activities taking place at BMC.
