Project time

2019

Size

about 450 students

Gottsundaskolan is a school located just outside Uppsala city centre with about 450 students from grades 6-9. After a fire in 2018, two of the three school buildings were completely destroyed and the third was damaged by smoke and moisture.

Indicum was given the project conditions that a new temporary school consisting of two two-storey modules would be ready for occupancy in the autumn semester of 2019 and that the building that survived the fire would be renovated and restored. The new temporary building modules would be used until a completely new school was built. Indicum would, in consultation with the business, the municipal manager and the project’s house architects, work on the interior design and be responsible for ensuring that the interior environment is as desired by the business. The environment would also comply with the guidelines and requirements for a good indoor environment. Some furnishings such as school desks and chairs were already purchased by the business and would be used in the project. It was important that the timetable was adhered to and that costs were kept down in the choice of furnishings.

Challenge

The major challenge of the project has been to create a modern workplace in a historic environment. To find a good balance between function and aesthetics that meets the needs of Stockholm University and at the same time fulfils a representative role towards visitors.

Solution

As the project had a short timeframe and also a restrained budget, it has been particularly important to adapt the project’s governance and implementation accordingly. Indicum’s philosophy is to always work close to our clients and with a personal approach, of which this project is a clear example. Throughout the project, we have been fully transparent and have also invited the business to participate and influence our work.

Through a close and constructive dialogue between operations, the project manager, building architects and the municipal manager, we have been able to minimise the risk of errors in the project and also to ensure that the desired quality of the project is achieved. During the project, Indicum has met with representatives of all subjects and other school operations such as caretaking, student health and administrative staff. It is important for us to give all employees the opportunity to have their say. Not everyone’s wishes can always be accommodated, but all voices should be heard, taken on board, responded to and dealt with as far as possible.

För att på ett enkelt och tydligt sätt kommunicera våra idéer till verksamhet genom projektets gång har vi exempelvis använt oss av illustrationer, möbleringslayouter och material- och färgpaletter.

In conclusion, this project is a good example of Indicum’s ability to coordinate, have several balls in the air at the same time and capacity to deliver high quality material with short deadlines.

Gottsund School works according to a pedagogy that aims to develop learning as far as possible for each individual student, the so-called “learning to learn” pedagogy

Gottsundsskolan arbetar enligt en pedagogik som syftar till att utveckla inlärningen så långt som möjligt för varje enskild elev, den så kallade “learning to learn”-pedagogiken.
