Indicum has been responsible for the interior design of the new Psychiatric House, which has been built on the grounds of the Uppsala University Hospital. The building houses the psychiatry division of the University Hospital with outpatient services, approximately 96 inpatient places, administration, teaching and research. Together with representatives from psychiatry and the hospital, Indicum has designed the furnishings for offices, patient rooms, consultation rooms, waiting rooms and meeting rooms.

Challenge

The project has been complex, a balancing act between working with the building’s large-scale, transparent design and character – while satisfying staff, patient and community demands for confidentiality and safe, intimate environments for care.

Solution

Our work on the interior has created security for staff and patients by using as many soft materials as possible. Curtains and drapes have been crucial in creating intimacy in rooms with large expanses of glass and panoramic windows.

We have worked to create as much variety as possible in all areas of the house to create a sense of care and well-being.

A balance between creating safe spaces where people want to stay for a long time, but at the same time encouraging them to leave after the end of their stay.
